Dr. Flores is a recognized leader in the field of Thoracic Surgery for his pioneering efforts in the treatment of mesothelioma. He has established VATS lobectomy, a minimally invasive approach using three small incisions, as the gold standard in the surgical treatment of lung cancer. He published two sentinel studies validating its oncological effectiveness by demonstrating equivalent survival and recurrence rates with fewer complications and shorter hospital stays when compared to standard thoracotomy.

Chris was happily planning his wedding to Pamela in April 2001 when her diagnosis of ovarian cancer hit them like a ton of bricks. After postponing their wedding so she could undergo chemotherapy, Pamela & Chris were married in November of '01 and Chris thought they would simply put this diagnosis behind them. They both soon realized it wasn't so easy. Both Pamela and Chris began a journey together and separately in their new life as cancer survivors, she as a volunteer with Woman to Woman and Chris on his own journey to try to gain insight and understanding about the effect on men when their partners are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Over these past 10 years, Chris has also had to adjust to a new reality post-cancer and to learn to live with the constant vigilance and worry about whether the cancer will come back. Chris helped craft the Men's Guide to Ovarian Cancer and co-hosted along with his wife a Mount Sinai event on "Sexuality for Couples After Gynecologic Cancer."

Diabetes is a growing epidemic in the United States. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), an estimated 18.8 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, and another 7 million people are unaware they even have the disease. It is therefore extremely important to become aware of the symptoms of Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes and to share them with your friends and family. The ADA currently recommends that all adults aged 45 years and older be considered for screening by their health care provider every 3 years.

In the past 15 years, the number of individuals with diabetes in New York City has more than doubled. The Mount Sinai Diabetes Center is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the ADA for its diabetes education program. Through the Stanley Mirsky, MD, Education Unit, Mount Sinai empowers people with diabetes to take care of their chronic disease and prevent complications.

The Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine (CSM) at The Mount Sinai Medical Center will bring nearly a half-million square-feet of new, state-of-the-art medical research and clinical facilities to the area, with the aim of meeting the expansion needs of Mount Sinai's existing world-class research and clinical programs. Featuring six full floors of laboratory space and two floors of outpatient clinical space, the CSM will house most of Mount Sinai's cancer-related research clinics and advanced imaging technologies.
